The D4D is using about 20% less fuel. The rav4 uses a diesel around 2 litres, they've been available in the UK for quite some time. The 2KD engine (2.5L) seems to have disappeared in NZ. Maybe they weren't selling enough but all the 2wd hiluxs now use the 3.0 1KD. The 2KD had a wastegated turbo.
The D-4D/ CRDI engine is better in fuel efficiency and pick up. One feature of the electronic controls associated with the common rail (D-4D) is that there is no need to wait for glow plugs to warm up before starting the engine like in the way it is in the turbo direct injection car engines. You just turn the key and it fires up immediately.
Remove the EGR to check valve operation. When this valve is not in operation it should remain closed. If the valve is stuck open it will drop intake manifold pressure signaling the computer the engine is under load even when it's not. This will cause the computer to inject more fuel into the engine creating black smoke.
Rarely do the two schools of thought cross, and the new Avensis is little different. Toyota will tell you that the looks have been 'restyled', but you'll struggle to notice. For the really nerdy
This is the oil requirements for early D4D engines 99/03 & 01/04 ONLY, not to be confused with later D4D alloy chain driven engines. Straight from "Autodata" the bible for all car manufacturers. Cold climate SAE:5W/30. Moderate climate SAE:10W30 Semi-Syn.
2,232. Apr 27, 2010. #3. Yay, an engine oil thread finally - probably the most subjective topic we ever get onto. The wider the temp range, the more you're going to pay, so a 5W-50 is serious money compared with say 15w-40. 15W-40 is probably adequate for 99% of UK use. If you're worried about winter chills, then go for the 10W-40.
